Thelema is the opposite of religion. Its social ethos is granular, not glutinous. Its spiritual import is the inmost Will of the individual, not the coercive will of an imagined God Almighty!!!.
The word “religion” comes from the Latin: ligare, to tie, and religare, to bind — or as Joseph Campbell would have it, “the word religion means religio, linking back, linking back the phenomenal person to a source.”
Religion, Abrahamic or Samsaric, is an age-old confidence trick used by priests — those with the secrets — and aristocrats — those with the swords — to enslave the laity, the better to gain social position and material resources for themselves, but always against anarchic nature.
In every country and in every age, the priest has been hostile to liberty. He is always in alliance with the despot abetting his abuses in return for protection to his own.

Thelema is technology, the study of method. Aleister Crowley’s “Great Work” uses systematic methods to unite waking awareness with the inmost root of the individual’s being: their own Holy Guardian Angel. The work organises and balances the subconscious (in the Order of the Golden Dawn) and unconscious mind (in the Order of the Rosy Cross).
I am in the unenviable position of trying to convey information which is both true and useful while knowing that it is at best incomplete and at worse completely misunderstood, and thus false.
I saw and heard my Holy Guardian Angel more than 50 years ago. I know that what I saw and heard was a hallucination, but what inspired that hallucination is more real than I am. I have struggled since then to articulate what I understand this Angel or Eternal Self to be. Without success.
Aleister Crowley discovered a level of his own consciousness that he labelled Holy Guardian Angel and cobbled together words and ideas from English, Hebrew, astrology, Tarot, and other languages and metaphysical systems to write about how he got there and the implications of his discovery.
Having grown up in an Evangelical Christian setting, Crowley realised that his deeply internal connection to nature’s cycles had been labelled “Satan,” meaning “adversary,” in Abrahamic societies. Aiwass is Satan. My Eternal Self is Satan, and yours. All Sun gods are Satan. All the cycles of nature are Satan. In my opinion it is extremely foolish to treat nature as an adversary. Yet this is precisely what religious moralists do.
Separate-self is not a meaningful reality from the Angel’s perspective. Saying the Eternal Self is beyond reason or ineffable may be true, but puts it in the realm of the supernatural, which is not real. I know my Angel is real due to my experience, but in the absence of experience, the Holy Guardian Angel is and must remain a character of fiction to you. It only becomes real when you take up ARMS and discover it for yourself.
The star-god Hadit says, in his chapter of the Book of the Law,

Also reason is a lie; for there is a
factor infinite & unknown; & all their
words are skew-wise.
Reason is a description of cause and effect, the why (by what cause) and because (by cause) of it. But Hadit is “the flame that burns in every heart of man, and in the core of every star.” From Hadit’s point of view, reason is irrelevant for future and past are not separate.
Aiwass, Aleister Crowley’s Holy Guardian Angel, says, in chapter two of his sequel to the Book of the Law, the Book of Oz,

This is the test of true writing, that it be truth that reason may interpret. Yet reason ruleth not, and the Law of the opposites — called by moralists the Law of Karma — does not have Power. Reason hath no reason to exist.
The Knowledge and Conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel is not the most important goal of Thelema; it is the only goal of Thelema! Everything else depends on the K&C of HGA, which is accomplished by the Man of Earth grade, Adeptus Minor. The rest is refining and strengthening the connection.
Our Angels, like Ra-Hoor-Khuit soaring across the sky, see far beyond the horizons of birth and death, yet we each connect with our Angel only in the intimate present.
A Neophyte is not an adept. A Zelator is an adept. An Ipsissimus, being fully integrated with their own Holy Guardian Angel, is the most adept.
The truth is not out there. It is in here. The search for your most intimate centre, your Holy Guardian Angel, is the aim. What you discover about yourself along the way is the point. Each initiation-ordeal cycle changes your perspective which opens a new view of reality that then must be accommodated in daily life by means of the consequent ordeal.
We cannot know what our true Will is, we can only do it. Knowledge is at the level of mind. Will is at the more internal level of being: Binah, Chokmah, and Kether.

To be good by Victoria’s standards, or even Roosevelt’s, is to be evil by way of the revelations of Aiwass.

Now let it be understood that this evil is but a word to signify a lack of wholeness in the individual, as to the outer and the inner. There is no law beyond Do What Thou Wilt.
Liber 440 is a communication from Aiwass, a Holy Guardian Angel, to the Holy Guardian Angel in each of us. Its language challenges the sense of self at every turn. The deeper the level of adeptship, the more the ego is sublimated to the true Will, and the easier it is to perceive the jewels of wisdom scattered throughout Liber 440.
The “self” is really just a web of relationships. Gods and devils are symbols in the form of persons on whom to attribute theory of mind and with whom one may have relationships. Gods represent aspects of your own psychological makeup. Thelemic practices smite those fragmentary egos (the peoples) resolving them to zero.
The result is to free-up neurones that had been trapped in subconscious neurotic eddies sucking up energy and attention. A healthy and resilient mind has a survival advantage over one bound up in restriction and fear.

I am the God enthroned in Ra’s seat. I am Spirit and Will conjoined. Know that as Ra Hoor Khuit I am powerful to destroy and to build. As Hoor-pa-Kraat I do none of these things, for I am absorbed deep within myself, nigh unto the abode of Nu. Know that Had is my seed, becoming solar in his extension, yet NOT in his contraction. There is no God but God. There is no God.
The foundation of today’s wealth — money and social status — rests on the extraction and burning of fossil fuels. The resulting pollution from greenhouse gases, microplastics, forever chemicals, and so on, has increasingly degraded the air, land, and seas of our world.

Liber 440 is written for a post-apocalyptic world. Apocalypse means “from hiding,” or revelation. The revelation that destroys religion and the superstitions that bind, is found in these six words:
There is no supernatural in reality.
Nature is much deeper than most seem to have realised.
The Holy Guardian Angel, which Aleister Crowley wrote about extensively, is not above or outside of nature in any way. It is a level of consciousness which incarnates sequentially in human mind-body complexes. The physical mechanisms which describe the reincarnation of Holy Guardian Angels have not yet been described, but they do not abrogate the laws of nature.
I have used non-linear time, resolving to a singularity and expanding to the march of minutes we measure, in an effort to explain reincarnation not as a revival of past identity but as the transfer of potential for consciousness from one innocent human lifetime to another.
I can only write from my point of view. Early in my journey through life, I found a very different perspective from my enculturated worldview hidden deep within my unconscious mind. Liber AL vel Legis, the Book of the Law, reflected that hidden perspective. I was motivated by necessity to explore and bring waking awareness to the inmost part of my unconscious mind. And deeper still, beyond mind to what I think of as being — imaged on the Tree of Life as the Supernal Triad.
During my exploration, I repeatedly discovered in his writing that Aleister Crowley had been there before me. This lent me the courage to go on.
Liber 440 is a landing strip or training manual for reincarnating Eternal Selves. It is meaningless to those human animals who are not the reincarnations of Eternal Selves and to those who are but have not substantially unveiled their unconscious minds to waking awareness. However “inherited” potential for consciousness nags waking awareness to be known.
Actual Thelemites, those who train themselves to consciously access their unconscious minds, pursue the agendas of their Eternal Selves across many incarnations in the world. They have no need of institutional memory, for they are able to access the 93 Current by shifting their perspectives into the intimate present.
Leadership in the new aeon is of those with the deepest insight into the balance of nature.
Nature is not moral.
Nature is not fair.
Nature is prolific.
Old forms of institutional organisation are crumbling. New forms of ad hoc organisation are growing. The transition from the old-aeon to the new is well underway, though the crumbling façade of pre-judgement still looms over daily life.
The world’s initiation happened at the Equinox of the Gods in April, 1904. We have been sliding into the trough of the initiation-ordeal cycle for 121 years now. Somewhere along the line we will hit bottom and begin the long climb to a new civilisation, one in harmony with nature.

The words of Kevin D. Roberts, PhD contextualise Liber 75 vel Luciferi, verses 19 to 22. It is wicked and harmful to treat nature as an adversary rather than an ally. After more than 2,000 years of this guff, the Sun-god Satan says, “I kill thee for thou hast killed me.”
