Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.
220,1:26. Book of the Law,
chapter 1: verse 26
Then saith the prophet and slave of the
beauteous one: Who am I, and what shall
be the sign? So she answered him, bending
down, a lambent flame of blue, all-touching,
all penetrant, her lovely hands upon the
black earth, & her lithe body arched for love,
and her soft feet not hurting the
little flowers: Thou knowest! And the sign
shall be my ecstasy, the consciousness of
the continuity of existence, the
omnipresence of my body.
Aleister Crowley’s comments on the Book of the Law, chapter 1: verse 26 address the crossed-out lines and side note which appear in chapter one page six of the handwriting.
In the MS., the last 5 words of this verse do not occur. The original reading is “the unfragmentary non-atomic fact of my universality.”
This phrase was totally beyond the comprehension of the scribe, and he said mentally — with characteristic self-conceit — “People will never be able to understand this”. Aiwass then replied, “Write this in whiter words. But go forth on.”
He was willing that the phrase should be replaced by an equivalent, but did not wish the dictation to be interrupted by a discussion at the moment. It was therefore altered (a little later) to “the omnipresence of my body”.
It is extremely interesting to note that in the light of the cosmic theory explained in the notes to verse 3 and 4, the original phrase of Aiwass was exquisitely and exactly appropriate to his meaning.
– Magical and Philosophical Commentaries on the Book of the Law, ed. Symonds & Grant: Crowley’s comment on 220,1:26.
A characteristic of the writings of Aiwass is the seemingly random distribution of ideas, or parts of ideas, both within the Book of the Law and across time in its comment, the Book of Codes, and its sequel, the Book of Oz. As you are able to access hidden levels of your consciousness — by means of initiation-ordeal cycles which train adeptship — the Book of the Law, and its comment, become more valuable to you, per 220,3:63-67. Otherwise disjointed ideas come together and make sense when seen from an adept’s perspective.
In this case, Aiwass’s original phrase “unfragmentary non-atomic fact of my universality” completes the meaning and significance of verse 52, some 26 verses later in Nuit’s chapter.
220,1:52. Book of the Law,
chapter 1: verse 52
If this be not aright; if ye confound
the space-marks, saying: They are one;
or saying, They are many; if the ritual
be not ever unto me: then expect
the direful judgments of Ra Hoor Khuit!
The “direful judgements of Ra Hoor Khuit” are the results of misdirected magick. Magick is the use of your own sexuality to train your brain. Magick works whether you like it or not. Those judgements are, in effect, your experiences in the world. If you want to improve your experience of reality, choose to focus your sexual expression in the worship of Nuit.
“If this be not aright …” refers to the previous verse, particularly the last three lines.
220,1:51. Book of the Law,
chapter 1: verse 51
… Also, take your fill and will of
love as ye will, when, where and with
whom ye will! But always unto me.
The “me” in the first chapter of the Book of the Law is the sky-goddess Nuit. The word “will,” here and throughout Liber 440, is very unlikely to be what you want. It is your inmost will, represented by Ra-Hoor-Khuit.
I had a difficult time understanding what “confound the spacemarks,” “They are one,” and “They are many” meant until I looked into what Aiwass’s original phrasing on page six really said.
Unfragmentary: “un-” means not and “-ary” means connected with, or relating to. A “fragment” is a part separate or isolated from the whole. So unfragmentary means not relating to, or connected with, separate pieces, thus not many.
Non-atomic: “non” means not and “atomic” means indivisible. So non-atomic means not-indivisible. The double negative resolves to “can be divided,” thus not one.
Nuit says, in verses 29 and 30:
220,1:29. Book of the Law,
chapter 1: verse 29
For I am divided
for love’s sake, for the chance of union.
220,1:30. Book of the Law,
chapter 1: verse 30
This is the creation of the world, that
the pain of division is as nothing, and
the joy of dissolution all.
Fact of my universality: universality means “shared by all people” or “true in all situations,” thus without space-marks.
If the ritual of magick is not always unto Nuit, then expect the direful judgements of your experiences in the world.
Why? Because sexual expression programmes point of view at the level of the mysterious, but influential, unconscious mind.
‘The libido of the unconscious’ is really ‘the true, will of the inmost self’.

The future is built upon the present. Does your present perspective give you agency to change your future intentionally, or are you just a victim appealing for the supernatural intercession of God Almighty!!! or better Karma?
In the first chapter of the Book of Codes, which is voiced by Ra-Hoor-Khuit, the Sun god says,
718,1:5. Book of Codes,
chapter 1: verse 5
… You are a fool with your none, none, none! Canst thou not see my mother is invisible? She cannot be imagined, and in no wise drawn, save in symbol. How come thou insistest on thinking of the None? By necessity we may not speak of the Lady, yet it is Sin to dwell upon her in thought.
This paragraph from Ra-Hoor-Khuit’s chapter of the Book of Codes echoes 220,1:48, which says,
220,1:48. Book of the Law,
chapter 1: verse 48
My prophet is a fool with his one, one,
one; are not they the Ox, and none
by the Book?
One, one, one, or one-hundred and eleven, is the value of the Hebrew letter, א, Aleph spelled out in full, אלףAleph (1)
Lamed (30)
Pé (80)
Aleph (111), to which the Tarot trump card Atu 0 The Fool is attributed. Aleph means “Ox” and the first Tarot trump, The Fool, is numbered 0.
220,1:27, which follows the Book of the Law, chapter 1, verse 26, says in part,
220,1:27. Book of the Law,
chapter 1: verse 27
… O Nuit, continuous one of Heaven, let it
be ever thus; that men speak not of
Thee as One but as None; and let
them speak not of thee at all, since
thou art continuous!
Liber 440, is self-consistent and self-referential, as we can see from this example. Its cypher is relatively simple and based on the Hebrew alphabet (abjad) and corresponding Tarot correspondences. Its metaphors are to be understood by those self-inculcated with ARMS (Asana, Ritual, Magick, and Science).
The trick to coping with the ineffability of Nuit is to identify with Hadit, make a symbol of Nuit, and vitalise that symbol in the fire of orgasm. The Neophyte’s pentacle symbolically represents the universe as you conceive it, thus Nuit-Isis-Babalon, and can be used as a yantra from a male perspective.
From a female perspective, identify with Nuit-Isis-Babalon, deeply rooted in reality, and call Hadit, extended as the Sun, into your secret temple.
Obviously, gender identity and sexual orientation are unique to each person, and may change momentarily. Obeying definitive rules, doctrine, or dogma is as harmful as coercing others. All participants in magick must be willing and joyous in the ritual, or the judgements of Ra-Hoor-Khuit are particularly direful.
After a number of educative relationships, I realised that lusting after the person of my sexual partner created my own projection of her, and the real person was hidden, resulting in isolation. By sexually loving a symbol of Nuit, I created a universal goddess, neither one nor many, and I became Hadit, who says, “remember, o chosen one, to be me”. This strategy permitted me to pair-bond with the real changeable humanity of my mate. We became lasting partners in life.
All sexual activity trains the brain. We are always changing. The Book of the Law teaches us to wilfully programme our brains in the intimate present, source of the fountain of time.
If we fail to intentionally programme ourselves, others will do so to their advantage.
Love is the law, love under will.
