Jesus vs Satan

The Aeon of Horus brings with it a very different point of view than the post-WWII Judeo-Christian traditions in which I grew up. “The Aeon is a New Way / The old Ways are but partial in their truthfulness.”

English is part of the Indo-European language group, but its alphabet is the Latin alphabet of Trajan’s Column, which in turn came from the Greek alphabet with its Semitic origins in Phoenician and Egyptian Hieroglyphic. Aleister Crowley’s number mysticism centres around the Hebrew consonantal abjad.

I will describe the names Jesus and Satan in terms of the Hebrew alphabet and gematria.

Gods are symbols in the form of persons: real symbols, but imaginary persons. Their names can provide information regarding what the god represents.

Essentially, Jesus means Son of God whereas Satan means child of nature: creation and permanence on the one hand, evolution and change on the other.

European Renaissance occultists repurposed medieval Hebrew Qabalah (alphanumerical bible analysis) for the purposes of Western Hermetic mysticism. The Hebrew alphabet is at the heart of Tarot, the metaphysical schema and key to much of the language of the Book of the Law and of Liber 440 as a whole. Aleister Crowley references Tarot in all his writings regarding ΘελημαThelema:

יהשוה (IHSVH) is a European Renaissance occult alternate spelling of the biblical Joshua, יהושע (IHVSʔglottal stop
or silent). Of the roughly 4,000 Jewish holy men crucified by the Romans for the crime of sedition around the beginning of the Common Era, scores if not hundreds were named Joshua.

The Joshua of Christian myths, elements of which were discovered on the walls of 3,500-year-old Egyptian tombs, the Greeks called Ιησους (Iesous), the Romans called IESVS (Jesus), and the Muslims call عِيسَىٰ ٱبْنُ مَرْيَمَ (Isa ibn Maryam), Jesus son of Mary.

IHSVH inserts the letter Shin (ש) into the middle of the ineffable Hebrew name of the God of Moses, יהוה (IHVH), Jehovah.

This spelling, IHSVH (Joshua), provides a symbol representing Jesus as spirit crucified on the four classical elements — Fire, Water, Air, and Earth — or consciousness trapped in an animal body.

Christian doctrine claims that a supernatural being fabricated perfect human beings and cast them down into the material world where they, in their errors of sin, were to aspire to return to a state of perfection in heaven or be discarded to eternal shame and despair in hell. Thus much of Christian thought is concerned with escaping the limitations of the flesh for a higher order of consciousness after death, while depreciating “corrupt” nature.

Note the reluctance to group letters from the Tetragrammaton when expressing the numbers 15 and 16 in gematria: Tet-Vav (9+6) rather than Yod-Hé (10+5), and Tet-Zain (9+7) rather than Yod-Vav (10+6). These workarounds show reverence regarding the ineffable name and point to the reluctance ancient Hebraists may have had to award the original Joshua a spelling which so obviously means Son of God.

Also there is the salience of the letters ש (Shin), meaning tooth, and ע (Ayin), meaning eye.

Shin (ש), from which Leonard Nimoy derived the Vulcan Salute 🖖, is an initialism of El Shaddai, God Almighty. When flesh and bones have turned to dust, tooth enamel remains; when the body is gone, the spirit remains; when parents are gone, children remain. Shin represents “that which remains.” Joshua means child of  Yahweh/Jehovah, or Son of God.

Ayin (ע), meaning “eye,” represents the Evil Eye of the Pharaoh’s Sun-god Horus, , representing Satan: that which is material, base, and common (vulgar), that is to say: Nature.

So the biblical Joshua — יהושע (Yod-Hé-Vav-Shin-Ayin), YEVSʔ — begins with the first three letters of the Tetragrammaton, יהו (Yod-Hé-Vav), then adds שע (Shin-Ayin), God and Satan.

The denotation of the metaphor is given by Jesus in KJV-Matthew 5:38 “An eye for an eye (ע), and a tooth for a tooth (ש).” That is to say: Satan (eye) for Satan and God (tooth) for God.

The connotation of the metaphor is given by Jesus in KJV-Matthew 22:21 “Render therefore unto Caesar the things (ע: commonplace) which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things (ש: sacred) that are God’s.”

Abrahamic religion separates what is spiritual from what is physical, valuing God while devaluing nature.

Abrahamic monotheisms portray a permanent and unchanging God Almighty!!! ruling over the vagaries of an ever-changing reality; valuing meaning over truth.

Belief is a substitute for cognition. Nature is constantly changing. Belief shores up the ego, the sense of self as a separate and unique individual. The self is a fiction that we create. The harm in projecting a permanent and unchanging god is that it concretises self, becoming a prison which separates us from contact in the intimate present.

Actual spiritual development promotes contact with reality in the intimate present. Religion hides reality behind a shroud of value judgements: better/worse, good/evil, holy/profane, etc.

That duality justifies irresponsibility. “It is the will of God.” or “The devil made me do it.” Either way, responsibility resides with a supernatural being: a character of fiction who possesses no ability to change anything.

If you wish to free yourself from enslavement to priests, aristocrats, and other confidence tricksters, you must take responsibility for your own thoughts, beliefs, emotions, relationships, and worldview. This may sound easy, but it means addressing superstitious biases, not only in waking awareness but also in the subconscious mind, and destroying them.

The Sun-god Ra-Hoor-Khuit, who is Satan and your Holy Guardian Angel, says, in chapter three of the Book of the Law,

The war-engine is magick, the use of sex for brain programming. The peoples are neuroses, disowned fragments of ego which are often introjects picked up in the past.

We become what we worship. We take on the perspectives, beliefs, language, and mannerisms of those whom we idolise. When times change, and those introjects obscure reality, we can use magick to break them and re-assimilate the neurons they occupied.

The none that shall stand before you is the sky goddess Nuit.

The aim is balance, not judgement; contact, not meaning.

The work is not easy but it is doable.

The most efficient way that I know to take responsibility, and thus gain freedom, is to take up ARMS: Asana, Ritual, Magick, and Science.

Satan (359), Satan — as 359 — does not appear often in Crowley’s Qabalah, probably because the number is so obviously significant that he wanted students to discover its qabalistic associations for themselves. None­the­less, he identified Satan as the secret name of Horus in his comment on 220,3:74.

Het (418). The Egyptian hieroglyph Het — or — is cognate with the Hebrew letter ח, Het. The Sun-god Horus is Satan (359). The hiero­glyph of the Sun-goddess Hathor, House of Horus, is thus 359 plus 418 equals 777, the “son,” the number of a Thelemite, which symbolises the god in his temple, the Angel in the Heart chakra. See 718,2:23-24.

Twice 359 is 718, the Stélé of Revealing, the Abomination of Desolation (from a portent of thoroughly alone). You do not have a “friend” in Satan, who is your own Holy Guardian Angel, the core of your own being and consciousness.

The aim of Thelema is to unite waking awareness with core con­scious­ness, making all levels of one’s con­scious­ness an integrated whole.

The realisation that you create every person that bolsters your ego/identity leaves you alone. We may regard the Sun as God and even give it a personal name — Satan, Ra, Ra-Hoor-Khuit (Ré-Horakhty), Hoor-paar-kraat (Harpocrates) Heru-ra-ha, Helios, Sol, etc. — but there is no real person there. Satan symbolises the cycles of nature and the Sun, who is “Life and the giver of Life.”

Aleister Crowley put it this way in Magick in Theory and Practice.

Aiwaz, Aiwass, or Satan, is an archetype of the Holy Guardian Angel, yours and mine. My Holy Guardian Angel appeared androgynous in a vision in 1971, before I ever started on the path of Thelemic initiation. James Beck’s vision of Aiwass in the Book of Codes also implied androgyny. And Llee Heflin’s vision in 1968, the same.

I have always contrasted the self-described Demon Crowley, and his persona as the Beast 666 of KJV-Revelation 13:18, with Frater Perdurabo (Brother I-will-endure), the sincere seeker after truth. Crowley well knew that ego/identity is laughably insubstantial and ultimately meaningless.

Religion binds people together in common belief. Thelema is technology. It does not matter what you believe, it matters what you do.

Religion is glutinous, founded on communal convictions. Thelema is granular: “star & star, system & system; let not one know well the other!”

Truth is a product of cognition. It is found in the present through experience.

Meaning is a product of reason. It is an articu­la­tion of causal relation­ships, an explana­tion of reality rather than partici­pa­tion in it.

Thelemites seek truth in experience. Moralists seek meaning in reason.

The Sun-god Ra-Hoor-Khuit says, in his chapter of the Book of the Law:

The Sun-god is “in” the secret(e) fourfold word Tzedeq, צTsaddi or
Tzedeq (90), which is Atu IV The Emperor, alchemical Sulphur, semen, the X in the Ordeal X which is the first ordeal. In his chapter of the Book of Codes Ra-Hoor-Khuit says, “Let not the insincere contribute their blood; the God shall not dwell therein.”

In short, the vision or worldview of Abrahamic religions is false, as is the fear of karmic consequence in Dharmic religions. There is no super­natural in reality. Nature is not moral.

Abrahamic eschatology is pathological schaden­freude. Dharmic eschatology is fatalistic.

The converse to the Sun-god’s criticism of Abrahamic moral vision is that one’s perspective can shift inwards to subtler, more fundamental levels of consciousness and being. There is no God to stop us from seeing beyond the horizons of birth and death or to offer a sure and certain hoax of resurrection to eternal life.

Ra-Hoor-Khuit’s criticism of Dharmic moral practice suggests that outcomes can be changed by chosen behaviour. There is no moral ledger demanding balance of accounts. All that is passed to subsequent incarnations of the Eternal Self is a potential for the level of consciousness achieved in the previous lifetime in the world.

Thelema rejects the morality (restrictions) of all religions, yet adopts their useful techno­logies: prayer, worship, meditation, ritual, mindfulness, applied neuroscience, and so on.

Meditation and ritual are amplified by magick, the use of sex to cause chosen neuro­logical change, the technology of Thelemic adeptship. The aim is to link waking awareness through the subconscious and unconscious mind to the deepest levels of ancestral instinct, so to approach the world from the very fulcrum of one’s being and consciousness. This fulcrum is what Aleister Crowley symbolised as “Holy Guardian Angel.”

Nature is not the adversary of mankind, but nature is much deeper than most will ever know. We are still only at the beginning of an aeon in which a few, yet still a multitude, will choose to explore the depths of their own natures and so connect with their Eternal Selves.

The real adversaries are the priests and aristocrats who control others with morality and shame, all for the advantage of themselves and their sponsors.

The sky-goddess Nuit says,

The star-god Hadit says, “But remember, o chosen one, to be me.” – 220,2:76.

When the God is the Adorer, Nuit is everything.
