Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.
At noon on April eight in the year 1904 of the common era an extraordinary event took place in Cairo, Egypt. A wealthy 28-year-old Englishman, mountain climber and occultist, Edward Alexander Crowley, a.k.a. Aleister (1875-1947 c.e.), took down dictation from a disembodied voice that called itself Aiwass. On the following two days, April 9 and 10, the dictation continued, resulting in the three chapters of Liber Al vel Legis, Liber 220, The Book of the Law.
On January five in the year 1976 c.e. a 21-year-old American in Beaverton, Oregon, James Charles Beck, a.k.a. Jimmi Rocket (1954-2004), took down dictation from a disembodied voice that called itself Aiwass. On the following three days, January 6, 7 and 8, four more chapters of The Book of Codes, Liber 718, were received.
A year later, Aiwass dictated the three short chapters of The Book of Oz, Liber 77, to Jim Beck on January 11 and February 17, 1977.
These three Books together: 220, 718, and 77, are collected under the title Liber 440, The Book of Perfection. Jim Beck also received a short dictation from Aiwass in 1979 entitled Liber 75 vel Luciferi. The Angel clearly indicated that this message was “conversation”, not the scripture of the earlier writing.
Our consciousness of existence in the material world takes place between the two horizons of birth and death. For most people, what lies beyond these horizons is either unknown or explained by traditional religious beliefs. Yet, there have always been a few who could see beyond the horizon for themselves. The Book of Perfection challenges the reader to distinguish truth from falsehood, reality from illusion, for his or herself. We are enjoined to find the divinity within ourselves and to be conduits of consciousness between the spiritual and material worlds.
Liber 440 is a magic mirror that reflects the reader’s level of consciousness and spiritual attainment. Techniques of magick and yoga are employed in the creation of a temple, formed of the mind and body of the adept. By invoking the life giving Sun into your temple you can reveal your own star. With each advance on the path of initiation, Liber 440 becomes more valuable, ever challenging the adept to grow and evolve.
The two deities represented in the first two chapters of the Book of the Law are said to be secret to those who have not achieved the first of four major spiritual initiations and won through its consequent ordeal, the Ordeal X. The God of the third chapter, however, proclaims Himself the “visible object of worship.” Everyone can see Him, for His visage is the Sun in the sky, Sol, Helios, the star our world orbits in the solar system. His name is given as Ra-Hoor-Khuit in Liber 440. A picture of Him appears, below, on the front of the Stele of Revealing where He is being addressed by the Priest of the Princes, Ankh-f-n-Khonsu.
The priest says: “A ka dua tuf ur biu bi a’a chefu dudu nur af an nuteru.” Aleister Crowley paraphrased this prayer as: “Unity uttermost showed / I adore the might of Thy breath / Supreme and terrible God / Who makest the gods and Death / To tremble before Thee / I, I adore Thee.”
Here is the icon of Re-Horakty, or Ra-Hoor-Khuti, who’s name means Ra Horus of the Horizon, or Sun Falcon on the Horizon. The hawk headed Ra-Hoor-Khuit is the most common and best known depiction of the Sun God Ra. The hawk has sharp vision and from its vantage in the sky it can see well beyond the horizons of the earthbound.
